Family Foster

Family Foster is a new Swedish TV series all about the most widespread language in the world! Just how did a mongrel language made up of German, Scandinavian and French words on a relatively small island become the world’s need-to-know means of communication for international business, politics and even social networking?

English! The language of Shakespeare, the Beatles and Homer Simpson! What makes it special? Is it a good language for everyone to learn when not even Britain and America can agree on how to spell colour (or color?). English imports words from everywhere: shampoo from India, potato from Haiti, boondocks from the Philippines. Does it swallow up other languages whole? Will we all speak English one day? Or will the huge population of China soon mean that Mandarin will take over?

In Family Foster programme host Keith Foster and his 18 year-old daughter Julia will travel the globe, meeting Fosters everywhere. These families all have something special to tell about their lives and their use of English, whether they come from the South African wilderness or the booming Indian business sector.

Join us on the trip!
